It is an ALCO! And what a sight (and sound ) to behold – even in 1981 ! At a time when the major roads had divested ALCO power, the Quebec roads remained strong ALCO advocates – perhaps a tribute to the ALCO design pulling power. CART #30 is a C as in Century 630, former UP 2905. The unit was retired 1990. (what's interesting: some distance perspective, on an all Canadian route: Toronto is closer to Thunder Bay than to Port-Cartier; or drive Toronto to Quebec City, then drive that distance again on all two lane local highway – the two lane P.Q. Route #138 east into the Duplessis region is longer than Ontario's 401.). June 7, 1981 Port-Cartier, P.Q. Kodachrome by S.Danko.

  1. I remember those yellow UP at PSC in the Spring of 1976,before being shipped to CM,they had to have there camshaft changed out,it was scary to rev up the engines so much it was vibrating, there cam lobes had been welded up without machining.

  2. Funky scheme. Originally UP units (a pair were leased to CP for a bit too), they then went to the DM&IR for ore service, and Cartier bought them as well as the DM&IR (ex-B&LE) RSD15′s. One was repatriated a number of years ago and is currently at a museum in Arkansas (QCM 34 ex-UP 2901 I believe).
