In late 1994, CN entered into an 18-year lease arrangement with LMS (Locomotive Management Services) for 25 C40-8W units (715-739) which were to be on CN lines over the winter months. This arrangement only lasted until spring 1998; however, units 728-739 returned to CN on long term lease in 2001 and were purchased in 2012. These units currently wear CN numbers 2455-2466 and most are still in the original blue paint with a CN logo and "IC style" numbers(except for 2464 which was retired in 2012 after an accident).

In this scene taken during the first lease period, unit 729 leads CN SD40-2W 5349 and SD40 5199 on an eastbound through Copetown.

  1. Isn’t this westbound ???

  2. When I’d see the LMS units they were always trailing. I heard they were not equipped, as built, to lead in Canada. Someone can correct me on that one I’m sure.

  3. When they first appeared on CN they couldn’t lead because from my understanding they lacked the microwave, hotplates etc required under the contract crews had. Later on they had the needed equipment added, mostly at the Gordon Yard Diesel shop in Moncton.

  4. You’re right Bruce, it is! (Blame the guy who captioned it–me.)
