I'm not saying every day featured a passenger train with such nice power up front, but it happened often enough to keep us fans coming out for more. Especially VIA #75, for it was usually the largest train of the day, it stopped at Burlington West station (pictured) and the sun angle was always great. This shot has a lot of 'zap' to it, as I elected to shoot the image with Vericolor III ISO 160 sheet film loaded in my old 4x5 Speed Graphic. The setting was at 400 F8. From purchasing the film and the resulting 8x10 print I had made, I was out $10, which back in 1986 was a lot of dollars, but I haven't regretted coughing up for a single shot that worked out as well as this. Power is 6773 and 6769.

    A truly fine image and train Arnold. Small details are very evident. In addition, I can’t get over the tank car in the background (not the Procor). It is 1986 and this tank has an upright brake wheel. Your photo is so good you can almost make out the spokes in the shadow of it on the front of the tank. :-)

    Thanks, guys. It wasn’t easy, outside of some good slide film like Kodachrome 25 or 64, to get genuinely sharp pictures in those days 30+ years ago as it is with good digital cameras, as all the young’uns have realized. And the “Speed” came with but one fixed lens. Make do or else…….

    I don’t think today’s kids (me included) understand how easy we have it though..

    Photography was truly an art form to pull stuff off like this.. on film.

    A great image Sir! Todays folks willnever witness the great colours of the past (unless VIA does a heritage scheme some day!).

    Thank you, lad, for the comment. The ‘glory days’ are behind us, no doubt about that. It would be great if VIA had it in them to come up with a Heritage Wrap to really bring attention to train travel. But no, we will probably end up with one featuring a “Prep H donut’ or something…………

    I doubt there’s a Diesel locomotive that rivals the FA series of ALCO/MLW’s today. Beautiful shot. I hope the negatives are well preserved.
