I was down in Niagara doing my usual thing and heard this 246 was coming, so figured I'd finally shoot one of the military units in daylight for the first time and join the party. I haven't really put any effort into any of the ACUs, having only shot a handful in total; they're a little overshot (or is it "overcooked"?) every time one comes through southern Ontario if you asked me. But hey, some of them do look nice. As expected, River Road was the usual crowded photo lineup so I headed a couple of crossings north where I was the only railfan, on Chantler Road. With their slow approach to Welland Yard I shot them in three different locations before they reached the River.

  1. *slow clap* hahahha

River road is busy eh? I shot there for the first time in June and I was kind of the only one there. For a foamy as hell train too.

  2. River Road is a photo line for every notable southbound (or in other words, any time an ACU is on 246). If you were there for the CMQ 247 (what I am assuming you are referring to) then I am not too surprised you had it alone. It was a zoo for CMQ 246 (I once again was at Chantler Road alone for that one).

  3. Agreed that River Road is a very well documented angle (by me as well). Not many chased that 246 passed Hamilton (surprisingly), at least that I know of. I do recall seeing, from my vantage point, somebody standing atop their vehicle at River Road that day, I have a shot of that person with the passing 246 somewhere. Could only see the person as the car was obstructed by bushes, which made me laugh.

  4. Are you talking about the CMQ one, Mark? There was a big photo line at River Road – most I have ever seen.

  5. When I shot 143 with 2x CMQ at River Road it was just me – and one person in the bushes by the bridge.

I guess the Fathers day CMQ would have been a foam fest. I only got two shots, one in Hamilton (that made the CPR 2020 Calendar believe it or not!) then beelined it to my scheduled (grand)fathers day events for me and my kids.

I did chase 247 the next day all the way from Fort Erie to the Junction. Wasn’t many people out that day…. only 2 of us starting at fort Erie.. and it seemed to be just the two of us for most of it.

    I guess I missed the crowds :)

  6. Really eh? I was referring to that 246, yes. I thought I would’ve seen the gathering from where I was haha. Miss judged that one, my mistake.

  7. I only did the 246 in two spots.. only one shot turned out !! In retrospect I should have done more – I thought we’d have more shots at a CMQ leader…. hasn’t been one since that weekend.

  8. @SCH: I have yet to see your Mile 75 shot with the Campbellville sign :)

  9. It’s crap. I hate it.

  10. Mine probably isn’t much better. I didn’t do overly well with that train, but I shot it. I got a decent shot at that location but the sign shot is questionable. Maybe you’ll see one day…
