Caption: I was asked for a photo of one of the NKLX coil cars at National Steel Car. This photo is the best I can do. NSC 11 was busy switching on this Friday morning, and I managed to get a few decent photos of it. Lack of convenient parking near the plant is an issue, and I had left my car in a less than stellar location for this and my previously posted photo, so I didn't stick around too long. I recommend parking on Beach Road and walking down to Burlington Street if you plan on sticking around a while. But not too long, because the security guard may come out of his booth, arms flailing.

So many people park just north of this crossing on Kennilworth. Sometimes 3 or 4 cars at a time and particularly at shift change. Usually just people picking up or dropping off NSC employees, or delivering Skip-the-dishes to the NSC employees. I doubt Dofasco drivers or NSC security would even bat an eye at railfans parking there, I’ve certainly done it before.
I’m speaking from experience Mark. More so concerning photography of NSC equipment rather than illegal parking.
Thank you for this interesting picture Rob. We should be focusing on NSC critter no. 11. If new diesel switchers are arriving soon, guess no. 11 will be sidelined, so this is a historical picture. The added “frosting on the cake” for bean counters like me is that no. 11 is switching NKLX steel coil car 400099 and some sister cars, soon to be on their way to Steelcon in St Catharines for attachment of their covers. More business for GIO/Trillium ! If you are back at this location again and you see more coil cars, would be interested in knowing the numbers. Again, thanks for sharing, John
I’ve spent countless hours there and never had a single interaction or encounter with security. Not sure what you guys do to bring the heat down on yourselves! Haha
@rsmith – I’ve spent quite some time taking photos from where you’re standing over the last few years, and never had any security comment on it. As long as you stay off NSC property there’s not much they can do. Sorry to hear about your experience, however hopefully that is the minority occurrence. I’ve even had the own drive by me while taking photos there and nothing came of it. Perhaps he didn’t notice me, but I was certainly worried about it as it happened.
I was there about half an hour this past summer and didn’t have any problem with security. I parked on Stapleton Avenue as per Jamie’s recommendation.
Maybe it was the Greenbrier Companies hat and coat I was wearing.
