I have always had an interest is Canada’s island railroads. Sadly the years have not been kind to them and most have lost their rails. Thankfully my 2003 trip allowed a short period of time to visit Vancouver Island. At that time RailAmerica was still operating the former CP lines on the island. The two GP38’s seen here at the time were the main power, with Railink GP20 kept as back up. While marked as a GP20, the 2099 is internally a GP9 and the split exhaust stacks illustrate this. The unit was built for the CB&Q as a GP20 but rebuilt years later. I have crossed paths with the unit years earlier as it was assigned to the RLK/SOR out of Brantford but numbered back then as 1751.
