I have a sneaking suspicion this may be one of the last (if not the last) times Martech will haul tanks out of the former Stelpipe facility on the east end of Welland. They are currently in the process of moving to the former Russel Metals building in Port Robinson, and both sites have been bustling with activity for weeks now. The tanks are sent here to be cleaned for inspection, I believe. I am not sure what is up with the former Stelpipe centrecab, 615, but it is inside the facility currently. I haven't seen it move in over a year, and the blue centrecab has been making moves for both Martech and Welded Tube. I am not sure what the future holds for this facility with Martech moving. Part of me wonders if this is related to the HOPA Niagara project, which speaks of sites in Thorold, Welland, and Port Colbone. The Thorold site was recently announced earlier this month, leaving both the Port Colborne and Welland sites as unknowns. Time will tell though, that much is certain.

  1. Interesting. I was not aware of all this. And have not seen #615 in ages. What became of the tan coloured centre cab that used to come out at Welded Tube?

  2. Yeah some interesting developments around there of late. I wasn’t sure how many people would care but wanted to share this shot as a way of sharing some of that news anyways.

    As for your question- hopefully someone on here has an answer! :)

  3. James / Arnold, …any chance the Blue WTC Centre Cab is the old “tan” coloured unit that was at Shaw Pipe (now Welded Tube)…

  5. What’s with the CN 2414 sitting beside the building? Were they pulling cars?

  6. That’s part of the 20 or 30 dash 8s being scrapped down there.

  7. CN 2400 is ahead of it. They had been sitting there more than a month at the time this photo was taken. I believe they are going to be salvaged for their saleable or usable parts, and then scrapped. But not really sure. They could also be sold……..

  8. 2414 used to be a lot closer to the switch in the weeks before this photo but the line has moved forward by about two locomotive lengths recently as shown here.

    They are being scrapped.

  9. Martech has fully vacated this site now. I do suspect this move was to round up the tanks for a last time.

  11. The complex behind the unit has been demolished and cleaned up.HOPA is using the old paper mill in Thorold by the canal. The track to the CN interchange is being rebuilt by Trillium (GIO) who will operate any rail service into the plant.
    The old Hayes Dana plant is also being earmarked for part of HOPA’s plans probably heated storage.

  12. The unit in the picture is now the Welded Tube switcher.
    Trillium 108 handles the cars from CN Southern yard and the tube plant interchanging with the above loco as needed. Usually 3-4 mornings a week.

  14. Sitting where the cars on the far left are is a CN GP9, 2 IC SW14′s and the old Stelco GE switcher. All being held for possible resale i’m told.
    Trillium S13 # 108 is also parked there when not in use.
