Caption: I had made a promise to my Father-in-Law back in 2001 that if we were ever together again in a Canadian city with VIA Rail service that I would treat him to a train ride. He had never experienced rail travel on the Mainland, and his last trip was a return run from Gambo to Corner Brook on Newfoundland's famed 'Caribou' as a teenager in the 1950's. A surprise Christmas visit to spend the holidays with my Sister-in-Law in December 2013, unbeknown to him who had arrived the week before, gave me an opportunity to fulfil that promise made some 12 years earlier. Prior to boarding VIA Rail # 73 to Montreal at Fallowfield, I took the opportunity to capture a pristine 6459 in the new Renaissance paint scheme. With my youngest son Thomas accompanying us, we had a most memorable and enjoyable trip, with the VIA crews going out of their way to pay special attention to 'Johnny' on his first VIA trip! An added bonus was the revelation made to me upon my return by eminent railway photographer James A. Brown that the 6459 was the former 6403, the same lead engine on Canada's new polymer $10 bill! Coincidentally, only a month prior, I was fortunate to have been chosen by the Bank of Canada as the guest speaker for the Newfoundland and Labrador portion of its simultaneous National roll-out.
