I don't know what it is like at this spot since the Hwy 6 bridge got widened, but years ago a favourite spot was sitting on a ledge under the bridge; scanner in hand, and keeping out of the hot sun. That was the case when this westbound approached. Being mid-July I would imagine even the shade and the breeze that blew thru was barely enough to keep me cool........but I am ready when along comes CP 4731 and 4744 with a 58 car train. I like the stripes on the leader, but I kinda wish the 4744 was leading. Sure beats today's GEs anyway.

  5. I love this photo & beyond those comments already made, I’d like to offer some thoughts. First, the train is not “running extra” but is rather, a regular train. If I recall, 937 & 903 were the 2 schedules available for daytime westward trains to use. Second, the slag ballast has been fully installed, but the welded rail (CWR) program of the late 70s has yet to arrive at this location on the Galt Sub. Third, although the unit has ditch lights they either are not yet hooked up, or the hogger has not turned them on. When they first started to appear, there was no requirement to use them. It was only after a few times using them at night, that most hoggers came to really appreciate them. Eventually, they became a requirement & now, should the leading end of an engine not have them (at the rear of some units for example) a speed restriction applies over crossings. .

  6. It is very rare to find a locomotive without ditch lights on a Class 1. CN still has a handful in yard service and a few are out on the mainline with temporary lights, but not really many.

    The odd unit might not have it on the rear..

    Industrial locos don’t have then usually though, but those aren’t class 1.
