Here's an image of CN 9165, sitting by the shop building in Fort Erie. One would thin being now mid-March, its snow fighting duties are over for another year. Those big shields to keep the snow out of the engine compartments were quite distinctive. I don't know how many were equipped this way but I do recall 9178 at Stratford was another.
This unit was eventually sold to National Railway Equipment.

  1. Note the protective plexiglass over the number boards.

  2. Love these old F units! Great little photo…snow shields and all.

  3. Nice roster view, I think there were about half a dozen of those unique snowfighters floating around, some with more covers than others. Those side grill intake covers were removable in the off-season (you can see the mounts welded on when they’re removed), as well as the large top covers. Probably removed seasonally at MacMillan Yard shops?

9178 had some extra side intake covers for the louvres between the portholes. 9166 had had its full grills replaced with louvred vents as a 90xx and had openings cut for the side cover shields. A few snowfighters might have been culled when a bunch of A-units were converted into those weird 9100-series B-units.

EDIT: units equipped: 9164-9167 and 9177-9179.

  4. Thank you, MrDan; for a most informative summary.

  5. This place is still worth visiting as the Niagara Railway Museum operates of here.

I was there over the summer and there’s a really nice display outside and even trains that roll by…!
