Heading into The Storm circa 1986...and circa 2022 given the controversy regarding the 'structural issues' leading to the collision 'safetyness' concerns for the sixty seven year old Budd built equipment...
….those concerns were raised by a VIA Rail paid independent Consultant and is now under further study in a joint technical task force made up of current and former government employees….. hence buffer cars (headend and tailend) on all Budd equipped VIA trains* ...however VIA continues to state that the Budd built cars are safe under normal operating conditions....say what...
And of course what is a Consultants' main task ….. to justify themselves to their customer...
Maybe collision avoidance should be the priority?
So for now....here is a no longer possible view of the Canadian train Park car as it was in the early VIA years....
VIA #1 at CN Maple, June 8, 1986 Kodachrome by S.Danko
* the buffer car requirement is not new, a long time prior to VIA, headend buffer cars were required to separate passenger carrying cars from the locomotive(s)....and some how the railways that purchased the Budd built rail diesel cars found a way around that issue....when there is the will....there will be always be a way...
