Havelock to Toronto Sunday only train 383 is seen passing Burketon Ontario 40 years ago, on July 25, 1976. This was a popular way to travel from Peterboro to Toronto and a great convenience to people in Havelock and other small communities on the line. VIA maintained it until the infamous cuts of January 1990. Proposals to restore the service failed and are more unlikely now with the completion of highway 407 coming soon. In the photo, the station has been replaced with a shelter and the train is accelerating as there are no passengers at the flag stop.

  1. Nice. Thanks for sharing. I rode this train many times, first as a kid with my parents and later in college.

  2. Echoing Eric’s comments, this image brings back a flood of memories.

Thank you, Mr. Hately, for posting here on RPca – your collection is appreciated and enjoyed!

  3. Best Budd paint scheme ever.

  4. Nice “flag-stop’. No windows. If I remember correctly, it didn’t have a door either. Great place to have to wait out in the winter.

  5. My Mother was one of the few people to actually use this stop to visit her parents in Bowmanville.
