Great shot Michael, I’ve driven though here a few times but never considered what the scene would be like with the railway lift bridge still in place. It’s neat to see, and I just read the railway bridge was demolished in 1997, surprised it lasted that long.
Hi Mark, yes the Bridge came out in 1997, The St Lawrence Seaway was on a push to reduce costs so both the Port Colborne and Allanburg Bridges came out at the same time. With Port it was the extension of the Port Colborne Harbor Line to Robin Hood along the old Welland Canal (Weir), that made the Bridge redundant. This allowed PCHR (Trillium) to reach the Maple Leaf Mill, and Government Elevator entirely on a west side route. It also killed the Humberstone Sub, CN Nickel Yard, Connecting Sub and marginalized all the east side canal traffic…
