GMD shop switcher 113 (one of the former EMD demo SW1500 units) is pictured outside the GMD London locomotive assembly plant, outfitted with buffers to handle new SNTF Algerian export locomotives under construction (one is visible inside the plant).

Built in 1971 was a demo unit and formerly used as a shop switcher at EMD's La Grange IL plant, the 113 only lasted about two years as a shop switcher at London before it was traded with Essex Terminal Railway (and became ETR's 107) for their SW8 102, due to issues with tight trackage at the plant.

  1. Once again thank you for digging this out. Tight trackage? Trucks couldn’t handle it?

  2. Apparently the radius of some of the track might have been a bit too tight. I’m thinking the SW1500 may have been a little bit overpowered for a shop switcher as well, which might make it attractive for ETR to swap an older lower-HP unit with GMD for it.

  3. That seems like a reasonable explanation
