GEXR 583 is arriving in Guelph with construction equipment all around. With the death of the OBRY the Guelph Junction Railway is expanding due to increased business from the OBRY, and where the OBRY rails are being removed the GJR is adding them in return. A new track is being added at what is now called Kaufman's siding with another track planned - soon this will be a 4 track yard with the mainline right down the middle, I imagine it'll have to be called Kaufman's yard after completion. The name apparently harkens back to a company called Kaufman's Shoes (Kaufman's Rubber) but this company name only indicates a very large Kitchener factory presence, not one in Guelph based on a cursory search on the subject. More research is required.

    That’s an interesting development out of the OBRY’s demise. Is the extra traffic trans-load business that will be trucked to Orangeville ?

    The neat thing is there was a siding that went off to the left of the image here at one time too, serving Wellington Packers, a pork slaughter/packing facility. See aerial image below. The Kaufman siding can be see here, with Wellington Packers above (east) of the rail line. The Matthew-Wells Pickle company sits at centre, with McColl-Frontenac Oil Company storage tanks and pumphouse at far left.

    McColl – Frontenac Oil Company became Texaco in 1959, later Imperial Oil in 1989. Explains that small chunk of brownfield off to the right of your shot Steve. With the construction of the plaza just off to the left a number of bricks from Wellington Packers have surfaced, scattered around the piles of earth.

    No, Accurate rail has the contract to remove the rails. I don’t think any of it is being sourced from there, probably just PNR’s stock

    Amnyway Jacob I still question that the name Kaufman’s has anything to do with the rubber/shoe company.
