GEXR 180, 179 lifting road graders out of the spur just West of their station, readying for shipment down to Stratford and the CN.
Road equipment had been built in Goderich since back around 1915 when it was Dominion Road Machinery Co in town. When the GEXR was formed, only 3 months before this photo was taken; the company was known as Champion Road Machinery, but it was bought out by Volvo in 1997. "Volvo" graders were built until the plant closed in 2008; and everything was moved out by 2010. Another example of government making it too expensive to manufacture in this country. The grader business was relocated to the USA.

  1. Classic GEXR!

  2. At least these tracks are used for transload (plastic pellets) now.

  3. I was wondering what they used them for previously. There was some sort of hoist or something on both tracks; I thought for maybe locomotive wheel change-outs or something. Perhaps someone with the former CN there would know.

  4. The hoist, was actually Champion’s gantry crane. They used to lift the road graders on to flats as well as using the ramp.

  5. YES!!! Thats right. I thank you for this. I had plum forgotten.
