For twenty five years – more or less - the GMD SD40-2 was CP Rail's 'standard road power',
a trio of SD40-2's was, well, a common sight, such as here, with 5904 - 5788 – 5673
CP RAIL Extra 5904 South has completed the set-off – the lumber load seen at extreme right - and is returning to train (
The marker lights are illuminated indicating an 'extra'.
At mile 114.7 Mactier Sub on a steamy July 1, 1988, Kodachrome by S.Danko
For the record, my 1991 Trackside Guide ( for the 1990 rail year ) records CP Rail owning 79 SD40; 480 SD40-2; 25 SD40-2F (the latter 1988 builds', missing the CP Rail 'The Canadian' by a mere 9 years or so....imagine a 9000 leading 'The Canadian' through Morant's Curve.....)
And as at 1990 zero, nada, zilch GE's on CP Rail's roster. ( GE era commenced 1995 )
( and at 1990 CN had a lonely six GE boxcab electrics built 1914 and three built 1950; and CN had 30 new GE Dash 8-40CM's # 2400-2429 built that year ).
and that appears to be a mid 1980's Nissan 300 ZX Turbo.....I am certain someone out there can confirm....
…..so....imagine a 9000 leading 'The Canadian' through Morant's Curve.....
