Five retired D&H locomotives follow behind the active units on a westbound CP train, lead by SOO 763 (SD40-2) and HATX 517 (GP40-2). Photographed toward the west end of CP's Quebec Street Yard, near the landmark military heritage T-Block building.
D&H 5000-5011 are RS-11, while D&H 5012-5023 are RS-36. Other than high/low short hoods not much visible difference, all have Alco 251 V12 prime movers of 1800 HP. Blue DH5002, then DH50??, DH5023, DH5017, DH5009 with a piggyback trailer on flatcar (TOFC) beginning the train.
CP acquired the D&H in 1992; online sources indicate that these engines were sold to NRE in 1993, with most of them scrapped. Looks to me like they are en route west to NRE in Silvis IL.
DH 5017 was saved, it is running in fresh D&H colours on the Delaware & Ulster tourist railway of Arkville NY (as of 2018).

  2. Hahahaha…Snake………I wondered where these relics disappeared to. The five sat dead in Oneonta thru the winter of 1993/94 and May 11, 1994 saw 5009 and 5017 coming back into Oneonta from somewhere after having their prime movers lifted. The units in the photo are D&H 5002, 5022, 5023, 5017 and 5009. The date of the photo I would consider in error as the units were still at Oneonta mid-May 1994. Great shot, though..lessee, I need a good stiff shot of ’40 Creek’. Now where did I put that bottle ???? Having a nostalgia attack!! :o )

  3. Further…yes, the 5017 is in Arkville. I had not updated my notes….when I saw the D&H 5009 and 5017 coming back in on train #270 05/11/94 I asked about the two units and was told they had been relieved of their prime movers. Obviously that was not the case for 5017.

  4. Still more!! The 5 units were lined up in that order in Oneonta March 4, 1995. They were gone by mid-April 1995.

  5. My thanks to Mr. Mooney for his information. I regret jumping to a wrong conclusion about the date – based on a web reference that indicated these RS-36′s were retired in 1993, after that going to NRE – not realizing there was a long gap between those events.
    Scan is from a negative, without date, part of a collection that I purchased – lots of good stuff from London. Some have 1991 and 1992 dates burned in by camera date-back (which I trust, but photoshop out). Some show new locos out of GMD – can be dated to month they were built. The collection appears to be entirely from the 90′s. If date is uncertain, will only submit if unusual/interesting. Going to be more cautious in future if the picture does not self-date.

  6. My new best guess for the date through London is April 1995. Matches with the leafless trees and spring-like light.

  7. Yeah, more than likely you’ve pegged it as it isn’t going to matter all that much so long as we have the year right. Those engines sat in Oneonta quite a while after they were retired. D&H 5022 was the Oneonta switcher for quite a few years before its eventual demise. I wonder if some of the boys helped themselves to some ‘souvenirs’ off of it? :o )

  8. The HATX lease unit would have arrived in 1994 and they were leased in those ratty colors for a long period of time to CP.
