Ex-Canadian National 0-6-0 7439 (O-18-a class, nee-GTR) switches the International Harvester plant in Hamilton in 1960. Sold to IHC in 1958, it was apparently scrapped 3 years later in 1961. Only two other CNR O-18's fared better, 7456 and 7470 which were sold to Canada and Dominion Sugar (Redpath) for plant switching.International Harvester Company of Canada (later Case IH) owned a few small steam and diesel locomotives over the years to switch its Hamilton plant trackage, including ex-TH&B 0-6-0 43 that was operated prior to 7439 arriving, and ex-Erie Lackawanna Alco S1 308 acquired in 1968 (that later went to Trillium).

  1. Another great shot taken in my hometown (Hamilton)—I always look forward to your postings Bill, especially the earlier steam photos. Thanks again for sharing.

  2. In August 1960 I spent part of one day cab riding 7439. Engineer’s name was Smith and he held a traction engineer’s (Ont) license to operate it. Had a fireman and two switchmen. Plant had 4 1/2 miles of trackage.

Cab ride arranged by a Harvester manager who rode the Tripleheader.
