Every few days, for 2 to 3 years, first thing in the morning, a train of empty sulphur hoppers would roll through Redwater. On this day, I could not believe my eyes when looking out the back window of the house after hearing the horn blowing. Its grab the camera, jump in the chase car and off to Egremont. Blue sky and sun, not too late in the morning either so there still is some light on the nose as the units head north. Leading up the 48 empty hoppers was the 9171, 9190 and 9167, with caboose 79286 bringing up the rear. This photo taken a couple of miles north of Egremont at 8:00. As was typical for these trains, they returned the next day around suppertime.

  1. Well, after looking out and seeing such power I am sure all other plans for the morning went into the dumper!!!
Oh to see the likes of this again.

  2. I’m sure you can relate to this Arnold. Yes, I was darn excited when I returned home. The real crappy part was now the 2 to 3 week wait for the slides to come back from Kodak. With your fingers crossed the whole time that when the slides came back, they did a good job of processing. I found it not unusual that every now and then you’d get a batch back where it seemed like the same care was not taken with development (little tidbits stuck on the emulsion). I think this every time I am out with my DSLR. No chimping back in the old days, you took your photos and patiently waited. :-)

  3. And to think NS sold off their ABBA set this month….

now it’s split up – one set to Carolina & Western and one A-B set to Reading & Northern. I know what i’m going to hunt for on my next R&N trip in 2020.

    Then.. there’s OSR :)

  4. Fantastic image!
