Enemy Territory: A Dofasco locomotive in Stelco territory? Yes, it happened! After some kind of incident crushed the cab of 416, it was sent to nearby Railcare for work. After being lifted from Dofasco Bayfront (The last such move that I am aware of from here to date) the crew had to go into Stelco to lift a gaggle of loaded coil cars, light power. Leading the movement is Dofasco 416 well inside the Unionized Stelco facility. After lifting Stelco, the crew then ran light power into Railcare to deposit the locomotive :)

Caption: Enemy Territory: A Dofasco locomotive in Stelco territory? Yes, it happened! Known to be bitter rivals in the Steel Industry in Hamilton, probably unheard of to see a Stelco Locomotive in Dofasco or vice versa. After some kind of incident crushed the cab of 416, it was sent to nearby Railcare for work. After being lifted from Dofasco Bayfront (The last such move that I am aware of from here to date) the crew had to go into Stelco to lift a gaggle of loaded coil cars, light power. A wise choice of moves that made this photograph possible.

  1. I like you posting spring/summertime shots in the middle of winter :)

  2. I need warmth.

  3. Whatever become of this unit? I did some research on it, and it turns out this was the yellow switcher from the GM Plant here in St Catharines. I was positive it was scrapped but recently learned that this was indeed that unit.

  4. 416 is still in service and toils at Dofasco daily. It was fixed up and returned.

  5. Stephen, if I recall this unit was dropped at Railcare to be prepped for its much longer journey to Larry Truck in Ohio for repair.

After being stuck to the confines of the Dofasco Bayfront since 2007 (ish) when they stopped doing switching at Dofasco’s Central Shipping it needed some work for road action again.

  6. I have more photos to share – it was smashed up sometime in 2017 or 2018 by hitting something at the roof level and the other photos clearly show why it was pulled out.

Whether it was fixed by railcare or Ohio – I can say for certain the unit was in service prior to this and it remains in service today.

I don’t know how long it may have been out of service, Dofasco seems to use about 4 locomotives a day with 2 as spare.

As you may know, the switch to the dofasco lead was removed in 2024 – but the lead remains. (they could in theory put it back fairly easily). The ore train wye lead switch was also removed too.

  7. I don’t know the date but I do know how it was damaged and this isn’t the first like this to happen. I recall a similar one going out in 2007 era to LTEX for work and came back freshly painted in this red and cream scheme.

I drive by here almost daily and I didn’t know the switches were removed or spiked OOS. I know the east leg of the wye has been out of service for quite sometime, back in the SOR days it was tagged out as it wasn’t required. I’m not surprised however as last Dofasco train I saw go out was in 2007 over to switch Central Shipping. Wasnt long after they moved the ops to Parkdale.

CP is only allowed on the west leg on the south side of Burlington St. as when the east went in they didn’t want to chip in to help construct it. It was really only installed for the ore trains.
