Bill does it again!! (sigh)
A late uncle of mine worked there during the war as a “relief” telegrapher and the helpers were hand-fired. If there was a heavy train going either direction, these telegraphers became “spare bodies” and had to help shovel coal up the hill…..dressed in clothes appropriate for dealing with the public. CP “generously” gave them 10 minutes off on their return to run home and change into clean clothes.
