Dodging rapidly lengthening shadows, a trio of handsomely matched EMD SD75is ease Canadian National detour train no. 131 onto the wye at Swastika Junction. After swinging off of the Ramore Subdivision, no. 131 would traverse Ontario Northland's scenic Kirkland Lake Subdivision for the 60-mile journey to Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. At Noranda, this train would return to home rails for the rest of the slow, albeit scenic, journey to Montreal.

  1. Gotta hand it to you Ryan railfanning that area in winter is a challenge ! Nice photo.

  2. Ryan, you sure are getting around photographing CN diversions over ONR, first west of Cochrane, then south towards Englehart, and now at Swastika entering ONR’s Kirkland Lake Sub. Very nice winter photo, and great record of these diversions. Any chance of a photo at Kirkland Lake, or at Cochrane Station. Thanks for sharing this enjoyable picture.

  3. The best locomotives on CN. Loved operating these units! Great phohto!!!

  4. Great consist. Glad somebody was able to document these moves. Who knows if they’ll ever happen again.

  5. Awesome photo Ryan and really like the trio of SD75I’s as well.

  6. @NiagaraMike11, thank you! As I discovered on the second trip, snow shoes and dry socks are a must as the snow was waist-deep in a lot of places.

@railwayguy, thank you so much! Over the course of two separate trips and six days in total, I logged almost 4000 kilometres. Yes, I did get photos are those locations. Stay tuned for more.

@ngineered4u, they’re certainly some of my favourites to photograph! Thanks for the comment.

@Tim Stevens, thank you! Those are my thoughts exactly.
