Caption: CPR ALCO S2 7039 and hump booster B-100 roll over the hump at St. Luc Yard in 1955, possibly in a demonstration to the crowd off to the left. 7039 wears the short-lived “smiley” paint scheme, debuted on end cab switchers in 1947, and was one of a handful of S2’s modified for multiple unit service with hump boosters B-100, B-101 at St. Luc Yard. Built by ALCO in 1946, 7039 would be retired in 1984. B-100, built in 1951 by MLW, would survive much longer, being rebuilt in 1982 to scale test car CPR 420931, and eventually sold for scrap in 2014. Per a pamphlet given out on a 1962 tour of CP’s St. Luc Yard by the National Harbours Board Conference, the St. Luc hump was the first of its kind in Canada, and the first to employ automatic switch control. Opened in 1950, the hump would be closed in September 1993.
