CP Rail SD40-2 5660, C424 4201, GP35 5007 and RS23 8026 head around the wye in CP's sprawling Toronto Yard as viewed from near the hump crest.

Likely a light power move to or from the shops, by this time the first three units were all still DRF units or "Diesel Road Freight", classified as such by CP for mainline freight service. 5660 would remain a DRF unit, but 4201 and 5007 would be rebuild and reclassified as road switchers ("DRS" class) a few months later as part of CP's 10 Year Rebuilt Program. 8026 is 1000hp MLW RS23 CP knew as a Branch Line Unit (BLU, formally a "DRS-10" in this case), and like the SW1200RS Pups, the RS23 units acquired a nickname of their own: "Rockets."

There's a lot present in this photo. In the background are the industrial buildings and factories located off Middlefield Road, and beyond that the residential neighbourhoods west of McCowan. Freight cars present in the yard include green CP 40' newsprint boxcars, C&O "Chessie System" double door boxcars, some short N&W covered hoppers, a cut of CP script cylindrical hoppers coupled to an action red gondola, and some Conrail open hoppers to the left. Also not to be overlooked are the assortment of now-vintage automobiles in the parking lot, including a red-orange Chevy pickup and what looks to be an AMC Gremlin hiding behind the bushes.

CP's Toronto Yard, located in the Agincourt neighbourhood of Scarborough in Toronto, was opened in April 1964 due to the need for larger yard facilities than Lambton and West Toronto yards. It continues serving freight operations today, albeit without an operational hump and with some of the hump classification tracks being removed.

  1. Taken from the hump tower? I remember when you could sign a release form and wander down to the shops…back in the days of M636′s, GP35′s and all that good stuff. Great memories.

  2. I enjoy these large views with all the various things to see. Excellent shot.
