CP 2-8-2 5187 and a 5400 series Mikado pause at Guelph Junction with an Extra West in the fall of 1959 (unfortunately, I only have the slide processing date, not the exact date of the photo). Normal practice was for helper engines to continue as far as Orr's Lake...Diesel railroading just isn't the same!

(Special thanks once again to Dan Dell'Unto for his assistance in editing this shot.)

  1. Extra 5187 West is doubleheading with 5405 to Quebec Street (London). Not much steam left by this date. Tuesday, Oct. 20th 2.00 P.M. these two plus 882 and 5118 were live plus 11 others in the roundhouse.

  2. This is a splended image and a great restorative work. Thanks for all the effort Doug and team!

  3. Good Work Guys!

  4. Absolutely beautiful, classic RR scene. The Virginian hopper is icing on the cake. Perfect.

  5. Great photo indeed…but, I’m also curious (due to my lack of historical knowledge here at Guelph Jct.)…what the structure is behind the “Virginian”? Looks like a CPR built structure. Bunk house?….Agent’s house?…???

  6. That house was a CPR house for a few reasons which I don’t remember. The operated that lived there was Chickenhead aka Murray Dronick which I think was the last person to live there. To the right of the house is a big house that at one time was a hotel of some kind so what I am told.

  7. I’d love to see a period picture of that house… it doens’t look anything like that now

it certainly looks railway from this photo!
