Caption: CNR J-7-c Pacific 5302 is seen on its last stretch of the Fergus Subdivision headed for the Brampton Subdivision and a station stop at Guelph with train 172, seen here on the Fergus crossing Paisley Street at mile 30.47. The switch just ahead of the locomotive should be lined for the normal position, which at the time routed trains through the Crimea Street wye (Fergus Sub main) and onto the Brampton Sub just east of Edinburgh Road (mile 49.54). It will likely take the crossover there onto the south main for the short jaunt to downtown Guelph before continuing onto Toronto. In the background at left it would appear to be the houses at 146 and 148 Edinburgh Road North, though they are in a row of six virtually identical houses.
Originating at Owen Sound with a departure time of 0550h (1956 timetable,) 172 would travel south via Palmerston arriving 0800h, continuing to Guelph arriving 0940h, and finally Toronto, arriving 1110h. This image was likely snapped just after 0930h. Based on the timetable the train would return north to Owen Sound as train 175, departing Toronto at 0535h, Guelph at 1925h, Palmerston at 2045h, and finally due into Owen sound at 2310h. Both 172 and 175 were daily except Sunday trains.
CNR 5302 was built in August 1920 by MLW as part of an order for ten such locomotives (5295 - 5304). At the time of this photo it had less than a year to go before meeting the torch in May 1959.

Beautiful CN steam
It seems this engine would have been added at Palmerston during the 18 minute layover. A smaller loco, likely a mogul or ten wheeler, took 172/175 over the Owen Sound Sub.
