5 axle?! Interesting, what would be the reason such an odd number of axles?
That was one of FM/CLC’s many options in their “Consolidated Line” – either the standard 4 axles, or 5 axles with an A-1-A truck on the rear (center axle unpowered to help spread the load of a steam generator).
EMD had a similar idea with the FL9′s original intended use, which was a “Water Buffalo” unit with a longer carbody to hold more water on longer runs (and the A1A rear truck to support it).
