Interesting. What’s up with the first car? Never seen something like that before. Do you know what purpose it serves?
It’s a wing car, built in the early 70′s for hauling airplane wings (DC-9, DC-10, MD-11) from the Douglas Aircraft/McDonnell Douglas/MDCan/Boeing plant in Malton, Ontario to final assembly in Long Beach, California. Since it’s an eastbound, that one is probably heading back to Malton from Cali.
UP had about 8 of them built in 1971 by Maxson (229580-229587), and Douglas Aircraft had 6 built in 1969 as black DCCX 1001-1006. They lasted until near the end of the plant’s life, and most were reportedly scrapped.
