Caption: CN 7168, the resident switcher out of Merritton back at this time, runs back in the Port Weller Drydocks to fetch a couple of freight cars. The unit is just about to enter the fenced off area seen at the left of the photo. Ship under repair in background not identified other than it is part of the Algoma fleet. After CN gave up the industrial trackage in St. Catharines to Port Colborne Harbour (Trillium) in the late 1990s/early 2000s, the spur line north of the QEW was removed in stages, and now only runs as far as Bunting Rd and Eastchester, stopping just short of going under the QEW's Garden City Skyway. CN 7168 was one of the SW8s on the roster, of which all were retired by 1989.

Well, this is a first. I’ve never seen any photos from this location…awesome!
Neat, the little SW’s colours match those of the boat pretty well!
Nice one Arnold. I remember crossing the lift bridge several times as a kid mid-80′s and always hoping to see a train. Never happened. Please tell me you have a shot of them crossing the canal?
I haven’t a shot of them on the bridge, Mike; and I have always regretted it. The ony chance I had, the auto traffic jam was too much to even get close, as the bridge had been up and the same loco was waiting to cross as well. And on this particular day, I had to go to work and could not wait around.:o(
After a little detective work, thanks to Rod Burdick from the Facebook group “Ships of the former Upper Lakes Shipping” we find that is the Canadian Olympic. The stack markings on the ship are from Upper Lakes. However, Arnold isn’t entirely wrong since the Upper Lskes Shipping fleet was merged into Algoma Steamshipments and the Canadian Olympic was renamed the Algoma Olympic on April 15 2011.
Neat scene from the past, Arnold. Nice to see the 1976-built Canadian Olympic still in Upper Lakes paint. Now operating under the Algoma Central flag as the Algoma Olympic, she’s not quite so shiny in her 40th year on the Lakes.
Great historic photo! It’s an absolute pleasure to look through your collection. Thanks for putting it up!
Kind words!!! Thanks!!! On the downside, accolades such as these make me feel historical myself. I like to think I am not quite THAT old. )
The Olympic is now scrapped !
