Caption: Charging northbound over the Trent-Severn waterway at mile 89.9 of the Bala Sub, CNR 6167 rumbles over the Washago swing bridge during a photo runby. I had been working the lunch counter on this Upper Canada Railway Society excursion from Toronto to South Parry and return, and had the opportunity to get a few shots during runpasts. This trip had operated north along the Newmarket Sub, and returned south along the Bala.
Two days earlier, Jim Brown and I had photographed 6167 being serviced at Spadina in preparation for this trip. Both he and I were fortunate enough to take turns operating the engine along the shop track during break in runs post servicing.

The bridge tender got “smoked and steamed” out of his cabin thanks to 6167 engine crew “smoking it up” for the runpast. Being a member of the UCRS Trip Committee, we were concerned about the practicality of this location for a photo stop and that it didn’t afford the best view of 6167, but after much debate, finally decided to include it with strict instructions to stay on the west side of the canal and not to cross the swing bridge. This and the CPR Havelock bridge in Peterborough are the last operating railway swing bridges on the Trent-Severn Canal.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments. What is heartening is that 61 years later one can still take the same picture, not with 6167 but with VIA’s Canadian. Don’t know if you can still walk to this spot, if not you can kayak or rent a boat at the Washago marina. If renting a power boat, don’t forget your boating licence ! John
