Caption: Before the rumours, before the eventual loss, and the heartbreak a quiet scene at the North Bay station as Train 698 prepares to depart North Bay on a nice summer day. The Engineer is walking up to the head end with his bags and a few passengers are boarding for Toronto. Now this station is a glorified bus station. It could very well host trains again, but I don't know too many people holding their breath. It's too bad the North gets neglected while hundreds of millions are spent on pork projects in the South, like giant stations such as a $50-100 million dollar middle of nowhere Monstrosity at Bloomington Click here to see - but be warned for those on blood pressure meds! on the Richmond Hill line. Metrolinx was once a fairly sensible operation but now the money being spent is just idiocy. The Northlander cost Ontario about $10m a year or 86 cents per person in tax dollars.

Love this!!
Stephen, this a great shot! I love it! I went through North Bay on VIA’s Westbound ‘Canadian’ out of Montreal on September 19, 1988 and we were in the diner when it stopped here. All kinds of CP equipment in the yard which was a real treat for this Newfoundland railfan’s first cross Canada train journey! Thanks for sharing. – Ken
Thanks. Standard fare – I wish I could have shot at the more Northern stations but I didn’t have it in the time budget this trip.
