Caption: Back in the 1970s when a couple of CN GP40s were geared for passenger service on CN, we saw them rather frequently. After all, this was pre-VIA, and anything goes. It was either 4016 (pictured) or 4017 making an appearance almost like clockwork down by the Jct. Out of many old images, I selected this one to upload because I felt it was almost a throwback to the quiet days of the past. It just doesn't look like it is actually shot in the city, per se. Rather, this could be quiet countryside anywhere in rural Ontario. That is the now busy York St overpass in the background, and I am standing on the hillside that overlooks, just to the right out of view, the junction itself. It is still early summer and purple flowers, which will coat the hillside, are just beginning to show their colours. The 4016 and 4017 were renumbered to 9316 and 9317 in 1981. Off roster by 1998.

Thanks for posting Arnold. CN GP40′s are by far my favourite diesel locomotive. Can’t decide whether I like the original mostly black/’Wet Noodle’ scheme or the follow up ‘Zebra Stripe’. So much has changed at Bayview, sadly, NOT for the better. Currently the local landscape is a sea of construction material upheaval and debris and standing nearby in one place long enough to take a photo would probably result in a trespassing fine. Really glad so many shots were taken at Bayview over the years.
Thanks Stuart. The tranquility of Bayview is sadly just a memory.
