August 26, 1978 at the approach to Humber on the Mactier Subdivision in the Oak Ridges Moraine, an enormous CP Rail train #12, the Toronto section of The Canadian –  normally an eight car train – is a thirteen car train today! And only about one hour off the advertised. You are looking at the impact of an air traffic labour disruption (either a work to rule, lock out or strike – perhaps a viewer can clarify - for a week (or so) no regular passenger air travel). Both CP and CN had demand and ridership levels not experienced since the Centennial Year - 1967. What's interesting: It is rumoured that to re-position (ie send home) some CP Air crews the CP owned airline bought CP Rail tickets. CP Rail placed every available piece of passenger equipment, including the Angus Shop built 2200 series coaches, into service and on this train the Chateau sleeper in front of the Skyline Dome is in coach service. Look closely, the Vancouver originated equipment is coated in a fine layer of dust (see trailing image) while the Sudbury – Toronto only cars (the Skyline Dome, the Chateau sleeper in front of the Skyline and the Park car) are clean. It also appears that one of the 2200 series coach may have originated west of Sudbury. Certainly the FP7A #1432 (ex CP 4041) and the 1900 series F7B are getting a good workout. And at this location for the trailing image, an eight car train plus the power is easily in the whole frame, but today – surprise! And on the tail end the Park car is missing the drum head, likely sent to Montreal for sale by CP Archives - by October 1978 the train will be 'Via-ized'. Kodachrome by S.Danko.
