Caption: As most of you on this site are probably tired of hearing by now; locomotive variety was much more impressive in past years than it is today. There were periods in which anything seemed to show up. This image is not an extreme example, but it is interesting.
This is a Mac Yd to Fort Erie train: CN 3542, 2117, 9307, 9316 and 9624 the power.
The 3542 was renumbered from 2542; sold to Hudsons Bay RR. The CN 2117, BBD HR616 was one of 20 behemoths from Bombardier, so unreliable they were all pulled from the roster by 1998; and this unit was peddled off to NRE.
The 9307 and 9316, GP40s, one went to RMGX and the second to Roberval & Saguenay as their #65. And the trailing unit, 9624, a GP40-2 (W)? Well, it got itself retired in 2001.

Now that’s a sweet consist.
and I thought the HR in HR616 stood for High Reliablity.
Interesting perspective, Arnold, it could be argued CN has among the best motive power variety of the Class 1′s in North America today. BNSF and UP might have more oddballs but most certainly in the east, CN is king as NS and CSX gets rid of all their oddball stuff..
I guess the problem is I have been around since the beginning of most all variety CN has to offer these days. For mainline power not much of anything predates 1990. Yard and other stuff power is interesting, though.
100%.
I know not to take current CNR for granted. I’ve been busy shooting the Guelph sub the last 2 years and enjoying it.
It’s not the mainline variety it once was but every once in a while a pair of goodies do get out on the mainline… as road power.
