Ahhh yes, the big year of mucho leased power.
“When I was 41, it was a very good year…” Interesting leased power on CN and CP, run-through GTW/DW&P and SOO units, and the last big year for MLWs!
Where did all the boxcar traffic go?
Literally you just don’t see it like this anymore and that was 1997…
383, 399 etc still have some volumes of box cars but certainly less than 20 years ago.
All the Class 1′s decided 1 or 2 years ago that the boxcar is a dinosaur and needs to be eliminated. Just where they think any existing boxcar customer will go, is a mystery.
We all know it’ll end up on our highways, either as trailers from Origin to Destination or as containers.
Nuts. We’ll see what happens. We still get our share locally where I domicile. CN set off 5 nice older boxcars at Rocktenn in Guelph yesterday.. not quite as old as the 40 footers but 50? footers with ribbed sides and 70′s era american railways on the side ain’t bad..
I just miss all those CN brown boxcars.. watching videos from the mid 90′s and this photo reminds me painfully of such.
Gotta agree with you, Steve. As a kid I remember long lines of boxcars on most trains. Especially along Niagara because so much fruit and such was loaded in them. A lot of it was very inefficient shipping when you think of it.
