Caption: Another of CN's unique locomotives. The GP40-2L(W)'s wide cab was a harbinger of things to come to North American RR's, albeit rather slowly. This was not a good thing. Personally, I think it is rather ugly on a narrow body locomotive - it looked like a bloody broken nose.
Many, but not all, GP and SD-40's suffered with this look. Luckily CN wasn't quick to purchase new locomotives. The next generation of power arrived with another relatively rare characteristic - cowls. Although there were F-45's in the 'States, CN was the only company to order cowled SD 50's, 60' and their first dip into the GE pool
