Caption: Another memorable day out on the Nipigon Sub with my good friend Kyle. It had been a few years since the two of us teamed up to foam the Thunder Bay area and this day we picked up as if we never left. Train 112 had been held most of the day in Thunder Bay, just being shy of 12,000' and unable to meet 113, who also was just shy of the 12,000' mark. Once they got going they were informed they would meet 101-28 at Firehill, who was still an hour and a half east of Schreiber. We followed 112 to Nipigon where Kyle and I sprung over to Cavers. It's been close to 11 years since the two of us had shot from the old pit along the shores of Lake Superior and needless to say neither one of us recalled it being that difficult to ascend the steep sand face of the old pit. After what seemed as an eternity of taking one step forward, two steps back we both got into our respected spots. Sitting there "recovering", it was quite peaceful and relaxing. The squirrels playing amongst the foliage atop the pit, the gentle lap of the waves of Superior against the rocky shoreline. A calm breeze... but no sign of CP's hotshot. With them on duty over an hour and a half thoughts of "did we skip over him" went through my mind, as we had stopped to check a couple spots on the way over from Nipigon. After about 20 minutes a distant rumble could be heard. Perfect! It shouldn't be too much longer now.... how wrong I was. I forgot how clear you can hear a westbound coming out of Rossport/approaching Pays Plat. For close to 30 minutes the rumble grew louder than became more distant, all the while the sun continued to dip lower on the horizon. Keeping our eyes pealed out to the point waiting and praying for a glimpse of a headlight. Just as I checked my settings on my camera, Kyle yelled out to warn our prize was in sight and our efforts were about to be rewarded. Shutters snapped as we recorded CP 8011 West snaking along the rocky northern shores of Lake Superior. By the time the tailend of the the 10,000' hot shot had passed, the sun had set. We slid down the embankment and back to our car to return to TBay to grab a pint and pizza from our old haunt and to watch the Blue Jays contend for a wild card spot. - They didn't make it.
