Ah, summer (well, technically very late spring)! The GEXR wayfreight to Elmira trundles northward on the Waterloo Spur just after 19:00 on a hot, sunny evening. They are crossing University Ave. at the University of Waterloo.

  1. That assignment/train symbol would be GEXR 584

  2. I really wish I could have photographed GEXR going by campus during my five years at UW. Alas, the best I did was just watch them (and the Waterloo Central) go by while I was spending many hours in the Engineering 5 building.

  3. Aivo, there’s still some shots I would like to get on the spur and by UW; however, I’m not sure if this train does daylight runs anymore. What program did you take? Sounds like you graduated recently.

  4. Kevin, I graduated last spring from Mechanical Engineering. Whenever I saw GEXR 584, it was around 9pm, but RLK2211 might know more. The only train I would regularly see in daylight was the Waterloo Central tourist train.

  5. I have some Aivo you can look at :) Worked beside the line for 10 years in Waterloo. Managed a few shots last year when they still ran north around 2000-2100 in the last rays of light, my understanding is it’s now closer to Midnight and restricted to a very short window of time permanently due to LRT construction and commissioning.

  6. Aivo, congratulations for graduating from that program! I graduated in 2011 in Earth and Environmental Science. Some long days spent at that campus. I even heard 584 rumbling past the DC lecture hall sometimes! Steve, you should share some of those shots :) I figured they kaiboshed the daylight runs of that train. So sad :(

  7. The window of operation for GEXR 584 is very limited, restricted to Monday to Thursday between 2300-0500.
Once the LRT construction really starts to get going that window is going to close to 0100-0500 same days.
