A very late running ( 15/16 hours) VIA #2 is heading east on the Wainwright Sub at North Cooking Lake with the assistance of CN 2519. Reportedly one of the HEP units on the VIA locomotives had failed. The joys of winter operations, at the time of this shot -30C on thermometer, -40C windchill.

  1. I don’t remember ever seeing CN pulling VIA before. Impressive.

  2. All of these photos you’ve sent occurred in 1995 or earlier, with the exception of the VIA delivery (which was a CN train). Safe to say CN leading a VIA train hasn’t happened in a while before this week?

  3. Ive seen photos of it in the 2000′s.

Also this will make you cry

  4. Colin, very colourful picture of #2 running late. No. 2 was scheduled to arrive in Toronto yesterday Friday, Dec 23rd at 230 pm, but right now on Sat Dec 24th, the train is passing Old Cummer GO Station, moving south on the Bala Sun at 60 mph, should arrive at Toronto Union Station at 10:30 am, 20 hours late. At least the Toronto bound passengers will be at their destination for Christmas, and connecting trains will be available for those heading to Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, London, Sarnia and Windsor despite the ugly weather here. Do you know if CN 2519 came off at Winnipeg ? Or is it helping all the way to Toronto ? Thanks for posting and Merry Christmas, John

  5. Colin, the train in your picture finally arrived at Toronto this morning at 10:25 am, but was not the only train being delayed by winter storms. Train no.55 left Montreal late yesterday afternoon and ran into serious delays including a tree blowing down in the 70 mph winds which hit the diesel cab and smashed the windshield. Train reached Cobourg early this morning but is stopped there due to signal problems (electric power outage) and more fallen trees. Passengers on board overnight, running out of food and water, and not sure when this and several trains from Ottawa behind it are going to arrive in Toronto. Delays are now over 15 hours, John
