You must keep a sun almanac in your back pocket, you catch a lot of photos with great sun angle.
Just have to know when the sun is good and be there when things cross.
It’s a stubbornness to pretty much never go out unless it’s sunny (with very rare exceptions of course) and to not take photos unless the lighting is to my liking. I don’t really railfan in many locations (these days when I do go out it’s basically just industrial Hamilton and the odd trip to Niagara Region) so the places I do go, I can afford to be selective about light and other factors. When I was in Thunder Bay last summer I had a few solid days of cloud/rain, and since it was a trip, I still took some photos those days. Different circumstances!
