Caption: A special place – The Rock. August 2, 1982. Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland. Need road freight power? Require passenger train power? Road Switcher work to do? Have a need for yard power? One unit type will do it: GMD's NF series. 1200 HP. Six traction motors. Short wheelbase. Oh, minor detail: track gauge is 42 inches. Terra Transport #927, in CN zebra stripes, is on yard duty today. What's interesting: One of fourty seven ubiquitous GMD NF210 (& 110) locomotives built by GMD 1952 through 1960 for the CN Newfoundland narrow gauge railway. Today 927 is now Nigeria 1161. Note the dual gauge trackage. Terra Transport was ahead of its time, most LCL (less than carload) freight was containerized. Some history: In 1979, all of CN's freight railway operations on Newfoundland, along with the CN Roadcruiser Bus service and CN's trucking operation, were placed into a new division named Terra Transport. On June 20, 1988, it was officially announced that the railway would cease operations as of September 1, 1988. Some freight trains still ran until late September, with the last scheduled run on September 29, 1988. The last scheduled passenger train ran on September 30, 1988, from Bishops Falls to Corner Brook. Some salvage trains were still operating in the summer of 1990. Kodachrome by S.Danko.
