I believe the original routing was to take the TH&B Waterford Sub to Waterford, where’d they get onto the CASO to runaround the train. After the runaround it was onto the LE&N southbound to Simcoe and then onto the CN Cayuga Sub from there to head east to Garnet for the Hagersville Sub. Eventually a bypass was built to connect the Waterford Sub with the LE&N directly, avoiding the move on the CASO to get between the two.
I think they may have eventually taken the CASO from Waterford to Hagersville at some point too.
I’m curious what crews would operate this train. A TH&B crew from Aberdeen west and then trade off with another crew or would the TH&B crew take the train all the way to Nanticoke ???
I’ve heard rumors that after the TH&B was washed out west of Aberdeen, CP ran the train east to Welland where they hopped onto the CASO westbound to Hagarsville. I believe, if it happened at all, this was a very brief route before the operation was halted. To further @jknott86′s comment, the running on the CASO from Waterford started in 1984. A nice summary of the operation and shots of the same power in Waterford can be found: http://rymalstation.blogspot.com/2014/12/throwback-thursday-1-stelco-steel-train.html
A TH&B crew all the way to Nanticoke and back. Watch for the Steel Train article in the TH&B Historical Society “Ontarian”…Research underway–publishing date not yet set!
So after looking at the blog link Mark has supplied, with the same locomotives featured; I get to thinking this “unknown” photographer mentioned on the blog might be Mr. Mercer himself?
Oh, I see the first car is different. But still, the blog shot must be 1984 rather than 1983 perhaps.
Sammy hagarsville has a nice ring to it. Something tells me Van Halen was on the radio of photographers during this chase!
