A serendipitous trip to Niagara Falls, booked weeks in advance for my kids, netted me the Maple Leaf's return with a glorious leader and also this photo: It would turn out the two days I was scheduled in Niagara Falls, there was an auction occurring at this paper plant to sell of surplus assets. A friend notified me, and I registered, attended, and brought along my camera. Normally this plant is off limits and you have to go through security to get in.Yes, I did photograph the other units on the property, which at the time were part of the auction. More to come later. Good news is this locomotive is the active unit and is slated to be moving cars again somewhat soon, the plant is currently having their track fixed up both inside and outside the gate.

  1. Iron & Oak Railroad Services was busy working in the rain today, there with a backhoe and a small tamper working close to the crossing on Allanburg Road. Looks like some new wood being installed under the rails. Hopefully that is a sign rail movements will be resuming soon. Looking forward to seeing those other units.

  2. I think it has something to do with the port authority of Hamilton starting something about transportation and warehouses. Bruce

  3. Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority has taken over to make a road/water/rail trans load and warehouse facility!

  4. NiagaraMike411, HOPA has taken over this area here in Thorold or do you mean the ongoing project on the old Stelco lands?

  5. Both Homer Jay. For Thorold HOPA is contracted to manage the property and likely develop the business with Bioveld as the development partner/owner. Slate asset management will be the partner for Stelco lands with HOPA.

There are plans to use the water berths that Resolute have beside the Canal in Thorold.

  6. No idea about Stelco lands but as of today the GIO Railway crew was rebuilding the track to the holding yard with CN by the old Hayes Dana Plant. The fencing has been redone at the old Thorold plant and the gatehouse renovated.
A sign on the gatehouse says HOPA and GIO Railway. #1305 was just inside the fence.

  7. Excellent. It’ll be awesome to see train service return. Now only if the Hayes Dana plant would get a customer too….. place could be hoppin’

  8. On March 24th the tanks are gone and the 1305 is once again sitting outside, but on a track that takes it farthest away from the road.
