A quartet of Conrail GP38's (7998-7910-7999-7893) claws its way out of the Detroit River Tunnel with train ELDW-3 (Elkhart IN-Detroit/Windsor) and past Windsor Depot on a rainy June 14th 1981. The head end brakeman has bailed off and makes a dash for the shelter of the station where he will wait to make the cut for the Electric Yard.
Since the Electric Yard tracks were fairly short, only 45-50 cars, the yardmaster would give the cut number to the operator who would instruct the train, via radio, to stop when the cut was in front of the depot. The brakeman would then make the cut and the power would return after yarding the headend portion to yard the remaining cars. Sometimes a second cut may be necessary.
ELDW's power would then return 'lite' back to Detroit.

  1. P.S. Those are the old NYC station light posts laid around the parking lot to prevent motorist from driving onto the track.

  2. Very nice. How many cars would be a long train?

  3. Steve. Various lengths from 20-30 cars up to 70-80. Sometimes no cut was required, others would require a triple into the yard.
