Caption: A photo I promised I'd share later, and now the time has come. John Freyseng wanted to see what I was shooting from the April Fools photo (long since removed) of me shooting over a fence in Hamilton, and here it is. CN 1408 on the 1400 job switching the Bunge Bayside lead in Hamilton. If I may, for those interested in the topic, I humbly recommend getting a copy of this month's Railfan and Railroad between now and June 20th. The target audience of the article is people who may be visiting Ontario to come find some GMD-1 action. Many regular area photographers already know how to find them - those in the know probably won't find the information useful. But our borders will open soon and many GMD-1's are located a short drive away from the Southern Ontario border or airport. (and no, despite what the R&R Website says, it was never intended to cover all of Canada, just too much to cover in a short article). A bonus is there are a few new pictures to look at. Because this photo could have made the cut I waited to see if the mag published it - they didn't, so I can now post it.
A special thanks to a few friends and RP.CA staff who helped with the information used in the article and thank you for allowing me to humbly plug the printed word. (Youngins, subscribe! it won't last withbout you!).
BTW Hamilton is still a great place to go fishing for the GMD-1 as two are still assigned as far as I know. It's literally fish in a barrel.

Two are still here indeed. 1439 is in the middle of the triple set, and 1408 is on the double set (west side at the moment).
Nice! I wouldn’t get too complacent about avoiding shooting the GMD1s though…like anything in railroading, they could be gone overnight. Currently (as of yesterday), I believe both GMD1s assignment to Hamilton are sandwiched. Again, that could change. SO GET YOUR SHOTS!!!
Tx James for info.
Very nice Stephen! I didn’t know Railfan and Railroad still existed! It was a Carstens v Kalmbach Trains face off.
You can’t go wrong with a consist like that. So Canadian. I believe that locally Chapters and possibly Wal-Mart carry Railfan and Railroad. I remember Zehrs did as well, but the last few times I’ve looked for it there they only had Trains and MR.
Thank you Stephen for answering my question regarding what you were photographing this past April Fool’s Day. Am glad in a way that R&R decided not to print this very interesting and very good picture (they made a mistake) as we get to see it on railpictures.can !
Well done and thinks for posting, and yes will attempt to purchase current issue of R & R.
We get the odd one in Cambridge as well now that CN’s resumed control of the Fergus sub. Can’t remember if there’s one assigned here at the moment; you usually see them parked at Eagle and Concession during off-hours.
Yes, right now it’s a GP9/GMTX 38-2 combo on 542
Hamilton boys represent! Between my article in the May issue and your June cover story, RFR has been generous with the CanCon
You got that right Ryan!
Those GMD’s are a pain to walk through. Always banging your knee or clothing getting hooked on something.
Interesting perspective, YoYoYogurt. Thanks for sharing.
