A mirage? Nope it's real. OSR rumbles south behind MLW's 181 and 505 past the old mileboard for Guelph near the intersection of Woolwhich St. (behind me) and Speedvale Ave. (crossing in photo). Bringing up the rear of the train is ex CPR van 434462. Sadly this caboose has fallen into some interior disrepair, but not as bad as the OSR's other caboose; 4900. The train made a set off a PDI Elizabeth, where job 2 (train TG-14-2?) was switching. It was powered by OSR 1210, 1591. I was surprised to see the SW1200RSu leading. To see more photos click here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/132395721@N08/

  1. At one time, this was the Guelph city limits.

  2. Jacob nice shot, but the sign indicates that the Guelph station is one mile away. These are “mileboards” and there would be one facing south and one facing north , each 1 mile from the station Downtown.

  3. Steve, I was aware of that, I was just pointing out that in the early 20th century, Speedvale Ave. was the Guelph city limits.

  4. Technically that sign means nothing in 105 territory!

Is there even still a SNS Guelph on the line?

  5. RLK2211; Nope, the SNS is long gone.

  6. The SNS ended up in the river not far from where it was. I suspect it’s either still there (and covered up) or taken by a local for a trophy. I should have taken it but I was too chicken.

This was in 2009… it was in situ before that.

  7. Mile boards on CP face the oncoming train. The actual station name signs face the track (but all 3 of the signs have the same appearance)…which is why I’ve always preferred CN’s method of using a yellow triangle for the mile board to a station, and then a very different sign for the station name. CN’s station name signs cannot be beat!
