A matched A-B-A set of CP Rail F-units (FP7 4036, F7B 4432, and FP7 4063) leave their westbound train on the mainline as they switch the west end of Galt Yard on a gloomy day.

By this point in time, the Alco/MLW and FM/CLC fleets of cowl units had been retired, leaving only the GMD fleet, which would soldier on until most of the passenger F-unit fleet was sold to VIA in 1978, and most of the remaining F-units in freight service were retired in 1982.

  1. Wow…….

  2. Very nice.

  3. I liked riding in those units, but I sure hated getting on & off them when they were moving…and we had lots of switching to do on the Galt Sub. Even when you thought you were “golden”i.e no work or meets), they could dig something up for you to do. One Sunday I was on a 36 car acid train on the head end with a consist like this, & we were told to stop at Woodstock, cut off our power & spot stock off the nose of our lead unit, as the stock pen switch faced east & the train that set the cars off was running out of time & couldn’t do it themselves. In a way it was a blessing, the fireman smoked stinky cigars & the hogger an equally smelly pipe & I was a non smoker.

  4. Awesome photo.
