A lineup of power at North Bay greets photographers aboard the Upper Canada Railway Society's massive undertaking of an excursion: a 692.2 mile trip from Toronto - Ottawa - North Bay - Temagami - Toronto, with seventeen coaches behind CNR 6167.  With the train having run overnight from Toronto - Ottawa on the 13th, the train turned west and departed the nation's capital early on the 14th. 6167 would be removed at North Bay, with ONR FP7s 1521 and 1511 handling the train to Temagami overnight.

Here, the consist has just returned from Temagami and a change of engines will be taking place shortly.  For now, photographers scramble to the head end to capture the moment.  At left is Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway 2-8-0 137, originally built in 1913 as Canadian Northern Railway M-3-e class 2164, and later to the Canadian National with the same number.  The engine was sold to the Ontario Northland Railway in February 1963, and displayed at Cobalt during the first two weeks of August as part of the town's 60th anniversary celebrations.  T&NO 137 later operated in excursion service during 1967 as part of Canada's centennial celebrations, and later at different times until final retirement in 1972.  It is now on display at Cochrane.  Front and centre is ONR FP7s 1521 and 1511, built by GMDD London in 1953 and 1952 respectively.  1521 would be rebuilt to ONT 2002 in 1997, retired in 2004, and put on "display" in North Bay, though it still sits at the north end of ONR's yard near their head office.  Trailing unit 1511 would be sold to GO Transit, becoming their APCU 906, and later scrapped in 1995.  At right, CNR 6167 stands ready to lead the train home to Toronto.

Today this scene still looks similar, minus the tracks.  The buildings at right still stand on 3rd Avenue, as does the station and empty platforms, built in 1916 by the Canadian Northern.  Much of the CNR right of way through North Bay has vanished as this portion of the Alderdale Sub from Nipissing to Capreol was reassigned as an extension of the Newmarket Sub in 1988.  CN applied to abandon the Newmarket from Yellek (6 miles west of North Bay) to Capreol in 1996, with removal by CANDO to follow in 1997.
