Caption: A gloomy Saturday evening finds VIA train #99, the US-Canada "Maple Leaf", heading westbound through Stoney Creek bound for Hamilton and Toronto. VIA F40PH-2D 6423 leads an Amtrak F40 (likely 296) and six Amfleet cars, passing by the old Waxman's scrap yard tower just west of SNS Stoney Creek where the Beach Sub once came off the Grimsby Sub near the hydro corridor. This was most likely taken from behind one of the lots off Cascade Street along the tracks, and if running on time would have been around 7:22pm going by the timetable. It's important to note that due to directional running at the time, this train was known as westbound #99 on the Grimsby Sub, and became #98 at Hamilton for running east to Toronto on the Oakville Sub (similarly, #97 from Toronto became #96 for Niagara Falls at Hamilton).
Much thanks to Mr. Mooney for helping pinpoint where this was shot from, and helping sort out the power (Bill had this one mislabeled as the earlier eastbound #97, which had run with VIA 6423 and Amtrak 348. A VIA unit was apparently used to assist a few trains around that time, and would often be turned in the 'falls).

More fabulous research Dan. Many thanks. Interesting to compare equipment futures some 30 years on; only VIA still rosters F40′s (albeit rebuilt), Amfleet coaches are still the mainstay of Amtrak. Amfleet vs. LRC? Definitely Amfleet; better riding and, unlike LRC, the seats can be reversed. I wonder if VIA considered reversible seats on their new Siemens order??!!
